The original hypothesis was that the dirtier vehicle would be more aerodynamic, similar to how the dimples of a golf ball create lift and drag on the ball, which allows it to travel further.
However, what they found was that the dirty vehicle was much less fuel efficient, reaching only 24 miles per gallon (MPG), while the clean car got 26 mpg.
